Working as a radio presenter and HR Manager at MFM 92.6 in Stellenbosch (2005-2010), while she was studying politics, it was her passion for music that soon saw her transforming from a presenter into a DJ. Although she started her career in 2006, it was only in 2011 when she became a professional DJ, that she adopted the name DJ Chopper. She may not be a fan of interviews or publicity, but her work history and success testifies that word of mouth is more powerful than any written article.
Here is a summary of the key aspects of her career:
Rated as the number one Wedding DJ every year since 2012, DJ Chopper has become the highest in demand when it comes to choosing a DJ. Having had no training in weddings she learnt quickly as she went on and soon her ability to read a crowd and knowledge of music made her a phenomenon. DJ Chopper changed the image of wedding DJ’s and revolutionized this type of DJ skill since she refused to play stereotypical “wedding music” at weddings. Her fresh approach, amazing ability to work with a crowd and a stellar track record in the wedding industry especially, ensures that she is booked months in advance.
DJ Chopper’s style, love of different cultures and positive reviews soon appealed to couples abroad and has seen her doing numerous international weddings including couples from:
Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Caribbean Islands, Denmark, Dubai, DRC, France, Germany, India, Italy, Ireland, Morocco, Mozambique, Persia/Turkey, England, Wales and America.
Weddings will always be close to her heart and in the last three years she has done on average, a little over 120 weddings per year. With the ability to re-invent herself and unique approach to each event she takes on, there’s never a dull moment and the one consistent element is a professional, top quality service to make the night unforgettable!
Back in 2006 when she was still trying to figure out how decks and CDs work, a new wave hit the sports scene. An unfamiliar concept of entertainment and music playing throughout a rugby game. At the time other DJs seemed uninterested, but she decided she would gladly do it to exercise her skills and after all, it combined two of her favourite things – sport and music. Almost 10 years later this is one of the biggest sport events in South Africa and DJ Chopper has been seen next to the field at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch ever since.
In 2013 DJ Chopper received a phone call that would kickstart one of the most exciting journeys of her career. What started as a once-off with the launch of sportainment (music with sport) ended up seeing DJ Chopper as the National DJ for Varsity Sports in South Africa in all sporting codes including: Hockey, Beach Volleyball, 7’s Cricket, Athletics, Netball, Football Mountain Biking. DJ Chopper is still working together with this successful company to make sure spectators have enough entertainment while watching nerve wrecking games across the country, many of which are broadcast on SuperSport.
Due to her background in weddings and Varsity Sports, DJ Chopper learned how to entertain people from all walks of life. So it’s no surprise that big companies continue to book her for their functions. She has played numerous successful corporate events including: Coronation Asset Management, M-Net, DSTV, FNB, Capitech, Kyknet Fiesta’s, Kyknet Silwerskermsfees VIA, and many more.
From 2011 to 2013 DJ Chopper played at almost every mainstream festival in South Africa, including Hart van Windwoek, KKNK, Woordfees and Aardklop, Cape Town Jazz Festival and Wacky Wine. Due to her focus on Varsity Sport and weddings she then decided to retire from festivals.
Anyone that has met her, worked with her or danced the night away on her dancefloor, will know that DJ Chopper is a one of a kind DJ, sure to provide the soundtrack to your best memories yet!
She believes in making people happy, the power of mixtapes, passion and the mantra…
“Live a little”!
